Outdoor classroom weather guidelines

The Anoka-Hennepin Schools Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program has developed weather-related guidelines for outdoor ECFE classes. These guidelines are subject to change. Parents/caregivers will be notified as soon as possible if class locations will change.

On class days:

  • Dress yourself and your child in clothing that can get wet, messy and muddy!
  • Wear outdoor clothing appropriate for the season and weather conditions.
  • Families are expected to provide their own sunscreen and bug spray.

Classes will be held OUTSIDE when:

  • The temperature with windchill is at or above 15 degrees fahrenheit
  • The heat index is at or below 90 degrees fahrenheit
  • No severe or inclement weather is forecast

Classes will be held INSIDE when:

  • The temperature with windchill is below 15 degrees fahrenheit
  • The heat index is above 90 degrees fahrenheit
  • Severe or inclement weather is forecasted or lightning is nearby
  • Air quality is at an unhealthy level (red/purple)

In addition to the guidelines above, when making a decision about where a class will be held, we will be using The Weather Channel, for the city that your site/school is located in.

We look forward to learning and exploring with you outdoors! If you have questions, please call the ECFE office at 763-506-1275 or email ecfe@ahschools.us.
